Dealing With Depression
efore I start, I would like to point out that this is not a self-help article. These are just tips for those that have someone close to them suffering from depression.
No matter how sad it is, chances are that we have known atleast one person that has or had suffered from depression at one time or another. It is hard to watch someone hurt. Expecially when we care for them. It’s at those times we don’t know what we can do to help.
Though their’s not much we can do, we can help in small ways. The smallest things really do count sometimes.
- Small gift.
- Listen.
- Support.
Take them to a movie, go to dinner together, buy them something they will enjoy. For example, a shirt s/he was admiring, or a puzzle that will be fun and productive to put together. Maybe you can even put it together with them.
Don’t be pusy, but if they need to talk - offer your ear. If they need to cry - a shoulder and a hug.
If they choose to go to counceling, the most important thing they could use at that time is support. A ride to counceling once in a while, or whatever you can do, within reason.
I know it can be hard, but if they know you’re there for them, it’s the best gift you can give. Support and friendship are most important.
