Home Remedies: Colds & Flu

Many people may not realize this, but colds and flu are viruses, rather than bacteria, so antibiotics doesn’t really work. Since this is definitely cold and flu season, I thought it’d be a good time to share some information about what you can do to help care for yourself when you get sick.

The most important thing to do when you are sick is to get lots of rest. You’ll want to stay warm and drink plenty of fluids.

If you have a sore throat, the best thing that I’ve ever used [although I hate it!] is to gargle with warm salt water. It’s gross, I can’t stand it, but it works. I used this method when I was pregnant and had a post-nasal drip. I was getting to the point of not being able to swallow because my throat hurt so bad, but I gargled salt water and my throat started feeling better.

If you’re suffering from nausea [vomiting] or diarrhea, drink clear liquids. You can’t go wrong with good ol’ water.

Do you know how spicy foods can make your nose run and eyes water? They might just be your friend while you’re sick. Eat foods with hot peppers and cloves in them. The assistance to help your nose run gives you a good opportunity to blow your nose and get all that stuff out.

Eat some warm chicken soup. No one is really sure why it helps, but it just does. If you have your own theories, feel free to comment and let me know what you think.

Hopefully I was of some help when it comes to the next time you’re suffering from a cold or from the flu.

  1. Almost a year since this post was made but still important since we are coming into flu and cold season. Keep those hands washed and try not to shake hand if you don’t have it.
