Part 2: The Negatives Of Being A Work-At-Home Mom

16 February 2008 No Comment

On Wednesday I mentioned the things that make working from home so great for moms, but now I’m going to mention the negatives that come with working from home as well. It’s important to see all sides of something before getting into it. Don’t just go by all the positive things that go with working from home, consider all sides.

The Negatives Of Being A Work-At-Home Mom?

No matter how many good reasons you may have to work from home, their are always going to be a some negatives that go along with it. The real decision comes from deciding whether or not the positive out weighs the negative. That’s a decision for you to make.

  • Boundaries. What some people don’t realize is that by working at home, you won’t have the benefit of a work-only environment. Even if you have a home office, you have to make sure your family knows when they can and can not interrupt you. If your friends call you while you’re working, don’t answer. It can be hard for friends and family to sometimes realize that just because you’re not working at an office does not mean you’re not working just as hard.
  • Distractions. When you work from home it is nearly impossible to avoid distractions. Whether it’s housework, or your family. When you work at home you need to be able to get the dirty dishes you need to do out of your mind. You will have to be able to concentrate on your work, not the chores that might need to get done around you. They can wait until you’re not working.
  • No boss. I know that’s a positive, but it can also be a negative. You don’t have someone near by to make sure you stay on task. When you’re at home, you have to keep your own motivation. No procrastinating.
  • No health insurance. Unfortunately, chances are that if you work from home whether it’s a work at home business, or you work from home for a business you probably won’t have the option of insurance. If you make enough money, you could purchase your own but that might not be an option you can afford right now.
  • Owe taxes. Unlike a conventional job [unless you happen to have a job that lets you work from home] in general you’ll have to pay taxes, because taxes wouldn’t have been taken out of your earnings. If you save a percentage of what you earn each time you get paid, it should be fine when tax time comes along. Just remember to save out what you need for when it comes time to pay in your taxes.

Now you can see that working from home isn’t always the best choice. The reason to work from home is an individual choice and some people just aren’t meant to do it.
