Finding A Computer That You Can Afford

Through my recent experience trying to find a laptop, I thought that’d make today a great day to talk about finding computers that are affordable. After all, it’s not always easy to get the right computer at the right price. I got lucky, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be found.

So what are your options for finding a good computer at a better price?

  • Refurbished. Many people run away from refurbished computers - why? The reality is that refurbished doesn’t mean used. It means that the computer we fixed up and made to be like new. It also means it won’t be selling for it’s original price, either. You can get a good computer this way, for only a portion of the price. Then, depending on where you purchase the computer from, you still have the option of a warranty like you would have with a new computer.
  • Pawn Shops. This depends on how you feel about them. Pawn shop computers can be a very cost affective choice for you but that doesn’t mean they’re the right choice. Their is always a chance the computer was stolen and sold to the pawn shop. Or not. If you don’t have a whole lot of money, then by all means - buy from a pawn shop! I know someone who got a desk top computer for $250 from a pawn shop and the thing works great.
  • Put an ad in your local paper. Someone out there might just be looking to sell their computer. Take the first step by putting a want ad in your local paper and see if anyone bites. If you have a limit on how much you’re willing to spend, make sure to mention that. You just might be surprised at the calls you’ll get.
  • Ask your friends to help. Just let your friends know that you’re in the market for a computer, and you want something affordable. If they see something, then they’ll let you know. It’s always easier to find a good deal when other eyes are keeping a look out for you.
  • eBay. Not just ebay, but any auction site you might visit. Check around and see if their are any computers listed. Of course, by purchasing from an auction you don’t get to try out the computer to make sure it works before you purchase it. On top of that, their’s no warranty. I wouldn’t buy from an online auction, personally, but it is an option.
  • Finance. This one really depends on you and how you feel about financing. It is possible to get a new computer for a small monthly payment. If that’s something you don’t mind doing, maybe you can consider it. Of course, if your income is unreliable, this probably isn’t a good choice for you.

Most of all, don’t give up. Keep looking and something is bound to come up for you.
