Google Adsense: Who clicks on those darn ads anyway?

30 January 2009 3 Comments

More people than you would believe. However, it may depend greatly on where your traffic is coming from, the placement of the ads, and your content.

I’ve been faced with my own fair share of people who could never understand why I continue using adsense on this website. The answer is simple:

I use them because they are effective!

The bloggers that I see complaining about adsense don’t use it right. Either it’s not positioned in a way to attract clicks or their content isn’t formed in a way to attract search engine traffic. While it doesn’t hurt to put adsense ads on an archived post, most personal blogs don’t need it.

However, many genre specific bloggers benefit greatly from adsense ads. Think of it this way, while much of the traffic—especially on archived posts—will surf in on the search engine wave, they came to you looking for a specific topic. The ads on your post are geared in that direction and, if done right, this traffic will hopefully surf on with their search by clicking on a relevant ad.

The problem that people like me, and probably you, face? How they appear. The largest ads are more likely to get clicked, yet they are not the prettiest. Just because you want to attract clicks does not mean you want to turn away regular readers by murking up your page. Be smart, be resourceful, and don’t be afraid to think small. If they’re prominently placed on your blog, the size of the ad space won’t matter nearly as much.

If you want to monetize your blog, don’t discount adsense. However, you might want to wait, or limit, the amount of ads until your blog base has been set. The biggest problem that adsense can pose to a blog is rejection. Ad-filled blogs can come off as junk.

I’ve had no success with Adsense over the last year. I’m basically ready to free my page of it.

    JR,

Really? About a year ago I would have agreed with you. I waited before going with adsense because I felt it was cluttery and didn’t yield any results. I suppose it really depends on how much of your readership is coming through search engines, though.

Adsense ads can be effective, but in order for you to make any decent money you need to have very good traffic. Also, you have to be in the right niche. For example, ads in financing pay much more then ads in less competative niches. However, ranking for well paying keywords that generate good payouts is very difficult.

Ad placement plays a very big role as well. Here’s an article from google that discusses adsense ad placement:

    Good luck everyone!
