A Look Into The Mind Of Mommy Blogging

To get inside the mind of mommy blogging, you need to know what it is.  The concept is pretty simple: mommy blogging is based around a mom who writes about her life as a parent.

This can involve the different aspects to dealing with children of any age, making choices from their perspective, or running a household.  If it involves children and family, there will be a mommy blogger who expands on that definition in her own way.  But that’s not what makes mommy blogs so attractive.  So, what does?

Like any niche, they attract readers who care about that area of “expertise”.  Mommy blogs attract other parents.  Whether they’re new parents hoping to collect some well-worn tips in parenting, or like-minded parents who want to validate their own feelings.  By connecting with these people, they create a following.

Then there are the mommy bloggers who turn that following into an income.  Dooce is a pretty good example of what is possible.  With an increase in visitors she was able to utilize advertising as a way to make money.  She made mommy blogging a business, and some moms hope to do the same.

Not every mommy blogger hopes to be a dooce, and not ever mom begins to write so she can reach an audience.  However, as long as she continues to write about parenthood and the issues within, she is a mommy blogger.  Some are extremely funny, like Mom-O-Matic.  Some combine business chat with the parenthood stuff, like The Mogul Mom.  Some, like me at Demandez L’Ange, just write about whatever happens to fit within that niche.  Some mom bloggers don’t blog about parenthood at all.

Are you a mommy blogger?  What “kind” are you?

Great post, Angela! I’m finding that my readers much prefer the business stuff over the parenthood stuff lately! :)

It is true, Heather. Although I don’t run a blog, but rather a child care forum. Based on the stats, it seems like parents and child care providers are more interested in taxes, both personal or daycare related then parenthood related issues.
