Think Murder, If You Want A Mysteriously Fun Business
Who would have thought a murder mystery party idea could turn into a possible business? Apparently Rae Walaska of Port Orchard. She was right!
A recent article from the Kitsap Sun talks about Rae’s journey into mompreneurship, one gruesome party at a time. With the mind of a writer and the heart of a horror fan, she is living proof that even the most unique ideas can easily become a profitable business.
How can you make that work for you? Easy.
Put your own writing to the test.
Grab some paper and a pen (or laptop and word program for the more tech savvy), then get to work on your own masterpiece. If you need a little help, think like Clue. Something big has happened, now lead your guests clue by clue through a maze of possibility.
Keep in mind that your story must guide everyone. Be specific, but don’t give away too much information.
Not sure if your party story is business worthy? Put it to the test with a group of your own friends. There is no better way to fine tune the perfect mystery than by enlisting your friends to act it out for you.
Once you’ve created a couple unique party games, spread the word.
Host a party of your own or see if a friend is willing to host one instead. Invite some potential clients for a meet and greet and take them for a step by step of one of your stories. Chances are it will be a hit. Furthermore, the word will spread about your mystery parties. As word spreads, business will grow.
If you live in a decent sized town or city, consider using social networking as a form of advertisement. This could mean twittering about new parties and discounts on Twitter, or starting your own fan page on Facebook. Networking is a great way to get the word out about your new business, while allowing people to find you online.
As your business continues to grow, expand.
If someone is already planning to purchase one of your theme parties, offer to rent (or sell) some props that fit with their theme. Not only would it compliment your existing business but it would offer you an opportunity for additional income.
If prop rentals don’t interest you, consider creating your own storefront. Not only could you throw large theme-based parties but it will allow you to turn a part-time idea into a dedicated business.
Bonus Benefits:
Low startup costs. You don’t have to have an outside office or storefront to get started, a home office and business phone would be good enough.
There is room to grow. Just because you start out writing party games does not mean that is all you can ever do. You have many different options for expanding on that basic idea.
Flexability. Writing is an insanely flexable form of business. Instead of the cookie cutter hours of 9 to 5, anyone who launches this kind of business can do so by writing at odd hours. This is perfect for parents, part-time entrepreneurs (who still hold a full-time job), or someone with outside commitments.

Hi Angela!
I then found myself reading several more articles that you wrote!
What an amazing website you have! My husband sent me a very mysterious email saying, “Have you seen this?” with a link and it brought me here.
I love what you wrote about a Murder Mystery Party business. I swear you had to be sneaking a peak at our business plan. You pretty much nailed it. I was a stay at home mom who was going a bit stir crazy and have always longed to have my own business. Unfortunately, being a Navy wife I am very limited in what I can do. I was very lucky to find something I enjoy, is very flexible, and the best part it has been successful and is expanding much quicker than I could have ever dreamed.
If anyone thinks this idea for a business sounds cool and just isn’t sure how to go about “creating” it I would love to help them. There is nothing more rewarding than finding a job you are passionate about and fits into your life perfectly. We are also “hiring!” Things are already growing bigger than just I can handle and we plan to keep growing! If someone is interested in an income from murder mystery parties, but doesn’t necessarily want to have to run an entire business, doesn’t know how to write the mysteries, or just doesn’t have the time please feel free to contact me. We have a Partner In Crime Program that we just recently launched.
You can get more information about our parties and our company at http://www.murdernmayhem.com
Thanks!
Rae Walaska
