“What’s the proper way to tell your parents you’re pregnant?

Dear Jane,

When you tell someone you’re pregnant, it’s not the easiest thing in the world. Telling your parents, can be even harder. It depends though, were you planning to get pregnant or is it a surprise?

From experiance, I got pregnant on accident and 2 nights after I found out I ended up sitting on my mom’s bedroom floor crying, trying to find the words to tell her. Once I finally told her she basically told me, “Okay, that’s nice. Now please get out of here so I can get enough sleep to go to work tomorrow.” It didn’t phase her. On the other hand, when I told my father, he didn’t take it well. He kind of went into a sort of shock.

Are your parents the understanding sort? If they are, just calmly telling them could be the best way. If they’re understanding, they won’t go crazy. If they’re not understanding… take a sensitive approach. Take them to dinner, wait til they’re in a good mood, then pop the bubble and tell them. No matter what though, I wouldn’t recommend keeping it from them. Sooner or later they’re bound to find out anyway.
