Fairweather Friends

This is a question that brought someone to Ask Angel through a search engine.  I realized I’d never written about a topic like this, so I thought I would give my own response to this one.

What is a “fairweather friend”?

It has been a long time since I’ve thought about a term like this.  Actually it has been around for a while.

A fairweather friend is someone who is there for you when things are good, but the instant something goes wrong, they ditch you and run off to another friend.  A fairweather friend is never actually a true friend.  They only stay around for as long as it benefits them.

If you think back through friendships you’ve had, you might realize you’ve even had a “fairweather friend” at one time or another.  If you’re lucky, though, then you would have never had to suffer the pain of a friendship like that.
