Stay Relaxed On Your First Day At Work

Everyone is usually nervous on their first day with a new job. Ask anyone how they might have felt on their first day with a new job, and they’ll probably tell you that they were at least a little nervous. Their are a few things that you can do to help with that.

  • Do not get ready too early. If you get dressed for work a half hour before you leave, that’s a 1/2 hour you’ll spend waiting nervously for the clock to finally hit the time for you to leave.
  • Leave a little early. Chances are that you will have to fill out some paperwork when you get there anyway, so don’t be afraid to show up about 5-10 minutes before you need to be there.
  • If you have to get up early for your new job, make sure you start off your first day by getting plenty of sleep. I know it can be hard to sleep when you’re a little nervous, so take an OTC sleeping pill if you need it, but make sure you will be getting a full 8 hours before you get up to get ready for work.
  • Once at work, ask questions. If you honestly don’t know something, ask questions. That’s much better than doing everything wrong. But, don’t be upset if you make a mistake either. Especially if this is your first time doing this sort of job. That makes asking questions even more important.
  • If you’re going to be doing a lot of different things, write them down. Make yourself a little “cheat sheet” to help you remember everything you need to do. If you only have one job, obviously you won’t need it. But if you’re the unlucky person who has a zillion things to remember to do before the work day is over, you might want to make your own little list as you’re told what your duties will be.
  • Try something relaxing before you leave for work. If you’re really nerved up about your first day, try doing something that relaxes you before you go. Obviously not alcohol or drugs, but if you feel calm after a warm cup of coffee or tea, make sure you have a cup before you leave. If it’s music that relaxes you, try listening to your favorite CD before you leave or even in the car.

Try following those tips and I’m sure you will be fine on your first day at work. By the time your first day is over, you’ll probably feel silly for all the worry in the first place.
